I live in Byron Center, near Grand Rapids and I am still looking into getting a bike. I would like to take the course and get like a $500 bike to drop and not care about to much to learn how to ride. So if anyone has any info on the best/closest place to take the classes, let me know. Also, if anyone has a cheap RELIABLE bike that works I'm interested.

Thanks,
Rhyan

Glad to see you want to take the course. I took the 3day MSF course and it was a great class. The MSF website is http://www.msf-usa.org and here is a link to the list places offering the course in Michigan. http://nm.msf-usa.org/msf/ridercourses.aspx?state=MI It appears the closest courses to GR are Rockford, Muskegon, Big Rapids, and K-zoo.

I went to Alpha Training Center located in Lansing and took the weekend class. I'd go with them.

ATC also provides the bikes, so you don't have to worry about getting one.

Thanks for the quick responses guys. I'm not looking for a bike for the course, just something cheap to learn to ride on myself cause I don't want to drop a nice bike.

Hey,

Just wanted to throw this into the mix. Last year at this time I had never ridden a motorcycle. What I did was (with the help of the wmriders) went out to the spot a couple times and got a little hands on, ass-down time. Usually someone has an old dirtbike or something that they wouldn't mind showing you the basics on.

Not long after that I went out and bought the bike that I wanted to have for the next few years. In my case a CBR 600RR. Yep, probably a bit much for a beginner, but with a little self control and a lot of practice in a parking lot...it wasn't as bad as i imagined. We set up a small training course using tennis balls cut in half as cones. If you hit them they just flatten.

So my advice, take the course. If your confidence doesn't go through the roof after that, than buy a cheap bike. Otherwise put your money into what you really want and just take it easy for a while.

Wendy has a nice Kawi 700 for sale on consignment at Treads and Sleds in GR. I would think this would be a great bike to learn on and have for a couple years. Sometimes it's easy to buy a bike with your ego but it doesn't sound like that a problem you have. That 700 has more of a situp style but yet is still sporty enough to be fun. I think you should go check it out. Plus you'd be doing a member a favor so she can go buy her next bike! Bonus! Size doesn't matter as long as you know how to control yourself.

Do you know anything about the bike? Any pics or a price for the bike? Would it make a good beginner bike?

Here's a link to the thread, bro. And yes I think it would be good start, if you drop it it looks like it doesn't have a bunch of flimsy parts to break and should be easy for a newb to maintain.
