How to make your 50 street legal in Michigan.

You will need to add or wind a stator with a lighting coil. Be careful with these. They put out AC, not DC and you will burn up normal horns. Local Honda dealer. Around $80

With the lighting coil, add a regulator. I don't remember the price. The regulator stops the voltage from spiking past 13-14 volts. Local dealer. $20

With those two items you will have more than enough power to run one driving light and the tail/brakelight. The coil puts out around 100 watts if I remember correctly.

The following are the minimum that is needed to be legal and pass an inspection.

Hi/Lo beam headlight. I have Autozone driving lights. HI is accomplished by aiming the top light higher than the lower light. Autozone $25

You will need a handlebar switch to switch between HI/LO also. When I switch it on to LO, it sends power out to the tail/brakelight wiring. Local dealer $20

Tail/brakelight. It is a LED unit. It can be powered by the AC without problems. It comes with a mudflap. The flap is not big enough for the moped sticker. I am making a small aluminum plate that will bolt to the plastic flap. Baja Designs $60

Horn is called a Mega Horn. It is meant for bicycles. Powered by a seperate 9v battery. I found it much cheaper than that all over the 'net after I had already paid them. Baja Designs. $35

Mirror for the left hand side. $12. Local dealer.

Brakelight switch. Ebay. $5.

I also added a fuse to the wiring to protect whatever needs to be safe.

Once you get the bike wired to meet all specs, you will need to go to the Secretary of State office and get the green inspection form. It has a section for a police officer to check that all requirements are met to be a motorcycle. The SOS office does not have a moped inspection form. Call the State Police and ask them what you need to do for an inspection of a motorcycle that wasn't street legal and now is. Or, like I did, call my neighbor and ask him to do it. He is a local city officer. It doesn't matter either way to me, I had everything that was required to pass the inspection.

Once the officer signs off on the green form, get your title that you should have received when you bought the bike and got to the SOS office. Get ready to keep a straight face and stick to your story. Mopeds can't be over 2 hp and not supposed to shift. If they call you on it and you break down and tell them it shifts, you will have to plate it as a motorcycle and have proof of insurance to get that done.

I had to sign another form there that said the bike meets all requirements to be a moped. $15 later I have the moped sticker. It is good until 2009.

Lights and the horn. The horn just straps around the bars and has a switch that straps around the bars. I have that up by my throttle side grip.

This is the HI/LO switch. I mounted it in the normal spot by the left side grip. It also has a kill switch if you want to wire that in.

Tail/brakelight with the mudflap. My 12 bar is in the way in the picture. I will take that off when I am rolling on the street.

Brake light switch. I got the spring at a local hardware store. I have it set up so when you step on the brake, the spring pulls the plunger in the switch and the light comes in. The handbrake pulls enough to light it also.

The right hand side in this picture is the fuse holder. In the back you can see the regulator.
